The new back glass did not have the etched line in the center like the original glass so today we put the line on the new glass.

Image

Image

The original back glass etched line was not center. It was off at the top by 5/16” and by a 1” at the bottom. After confirming the body line was in the center of the window opening we laid out the new glass with the line centered.

With a small hand held blaster using glass bead we etched a line that looks original except it is centered.
Thanks!

Bought a 68 charger today and drove 150 miles back home. It’s a good 5 footer but will get a complete restoration after we finish my son car.
Thanks!

Looks like you found a real gem Pat. These 68' Chargers have always been very popular with their coke bottle styling and good looks.

My brother and I attend the Chrysler Nationals at Carlisle each year and the late 60's Chargers are always a hit. While this car looks good right now I'm sure that it would benefit greatly from a restoration! :btu:

Kurt & I installed the back glass and trim, and made a controlled mess in the process.

Image

Image

Image

With the car protected we put a bead of Butyl rubber sealant in the glass channel of the weatherstriping. Then we placed the weatherstriping on the glass, put a bead of Butyl rubber sealant in the window frame channel and put a 3/16” rope in the channel starting & ending at the bottom.

Image

Image

Image

Image

With all the trim clip installed and locations marked we put a bead of Butyl rubber sealant in the window frame and around the clips, and then placed the glass in the frame.
Starting across the bottom Kurt slowly pulled the rope out as I pushed the glass in from out side. To help keep things clean we wrapped the rope in paper towels as we pulled it out. With the glass in we put another bead of Butyl rubber sealant in the window frame and worked it in with a wet finger.

Image

Image

Image

Starting with the right side we installed the trim going across the bottom up the left side and then the top.

Image

Image

This is a good before & after of the trim that we restore.
Thanks!
Pat

Wired the instrument panel to the new dash harness and installed the bezel in the dash.

This week marks the 2nd year of this restoration and looks like we are just a few months from the end.

Kurt & I put the windshield in tonight

Image

Image

Image

We use a little smaller rope on the front (1/8”) then we did on the back (3/16”) window and it worked well.

No problem installing the windshield with the dash pad in place. We will finish caulking the channel and install the S/S trim tomorrow.
Thanks!

Put the windshield trim on tonight, nice seeing some of the polished S/S on the car.

Image

After filling the channel with Butyl rubber sealant we started installing the S/S trim from the top down.

Now it is time to put the doors & fenders on.
Thanks!

The Bullitt movie car did not have backup light, and we also welded the holes in the rear valance that held the backup light. But as we needed an alterative backup light, we came up two LED lights mounted on the rear bumper guards.

Image

Image

Image

We mounted the LED at the top of the bumper guards and cut the bumper guard pads to fit. The light is well hidden and brighter then it shows in the picture. We need to paint the guards Highland green and install them next.
Thanks!

It's amazing how many little things are going on with this restoration Pat. When it is all finished you and your son can be very proud of the painstaking job you have both done to make this project a success.

You might want to contact Stacy David on Gearz, the TV show about building cars and trucks as he is always looking for restoration projects like this to promote. His show is on Spike TV.

We installed the fuel tank and A/C lines last night.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

We used strip caulk and ¼ - 20 nuts & bolts, not screw to hold the 1969 20 gal tank and trunk pan in. We need to take the original tank fill to a muffler shop and bend the fill about ¾” more. The fill on the left is for a 1969 but it is not as close as the original. We will also add a splash back baffle

Image

Image

Image

Had a friend crimp the hose ends to our marks and we need to make a few custom mounts to help support the AC lines. We will evacuate the system and fill it with Hydrogen to check for leaks.
Thanks!

Had no luck finding or getting a muffler shop to put a little more curve in the fuel fill pipe. And even after bending the tank fill neck the two were still off by 1”. So after reading on line about some of the anti-backsplash fuel fill remedy we decided to cut the flange off, weld a splash ring in the fill tube and change the angle of the flange to align the tank to the fill tube.

Image
Image
The flange was silvers soldered around the back and pinched welded in two spots on the sides. We cut the pipe to the new angle & length and use a Dremel to remove the cut off pipe from the flange.

With the flange cut off we can install a ring 1 ¼” down the tube with 2 vents cut in the top and 1 at the bottom for a drain. We spot welded the ring in place and welded & soldered the flange back on. Now it is in line with the tank fill neck and may even work better??? We will know the 1st time we fill it at a gas station. Thanks!

Even with all of the new parts being installed you still have to rely on some fabrication to make things work.

Hopefully it will all contribute to a very reliable car once it is finished! :btu:

We mounted the trunk and hung the right side door yesterday. It’s nice to see some of the outside of the car coming together.

Trunk gasket needs to relax as it is hard to close but should get better it time.

The 1/8” holes we drilled in each hinge helped quickly align the door. Hope to have the fenders on soon.
Thanks!

Just like the TV series "Overhauling" with Chip Foose, the big event is starting the engine for the first time! :banana2:

We work on the 2.5” exhaust system yesterday. the shorty header and down pipes are from JBA and from the down pipe back is from Pypes.

With just a few cut with a 2.5” pipe cuter the system fit great!

We will weld all but the mufflers and will also weld on the back hangers so you will not see the clamps. From the movie it looks like the Bullitt car has a slash cut tail pipes that stick out about 2 to 2.5”. one step closer to startup!
Thanks!

I do hope that this car, when fully completed will be appraised and insured by a specialtly insurance company such as Grundy, etc. Too much time and money has been spent on this project not to do so.
