I served my country in the U.S. Navy from 1960 (age 17) to 1963 (age 21). I went to Machinest Mate school after boot and was assigned to the USS Des Moines CA 134. It was a heavy cruiser boasting 8" guns and was the flagship of the Mediterrean 6th fleet at the time home ported in Villefrance Sur Mer, on the French Riveria. 18 months later I helped put her out of commission in Boston and then was assigned to the USS Boxer LPH 4, a marine helicopter landing ship, home ported in Norfolk serving in the Carribean. Aboard her I participated in the Cuban Blockade. 6 months later was separated from active duty as an E4 and served in the reserves without further duty. I would not take a million dollars for the experience or a million dollars to do it again. My heart and prayers are with our boys serving in combat. U rah!

My dad was in the Army. He was a Sgt. First Class and worked on the Huey and Cobra helicopters. He went to Vietnam and when he came back home was stationed at Hunters Army Air Field in Savannah, GA(my birthplace).
