Post subject: My Paint Looks 3D
PostPosted: Sat Jan 31, 2009 12:14 am
:bs: I just recently had my car detailed by a mobile detailer. He seemed good enough. But one of my fears came true. I saw it first on my friend’s car after he got it back from a shop that had done some "repairs". The paint looks 3D or like a hologram, it's weird and hard to explain. The paint looks like part of it is hazy and pops off of my car. I just hope someone here knows what exactly causes this, and how I can fix it. I would greatly appreciate input this is going to drive me insane until I figure it out. Thanks again.

I'd have to see it but it sounds like it is swirl marks. I get them when I try to rush a wax job. Sounds like the detailer didn't let the wax setup enough. Try washing, polishing and then waxing again. Let the wax totally dry before taking it off.

I agree with Dave. Waxes don't really seem to work well (at least in my hands) under 45 degrees or so. Not even those quick detail products like TurtleWax Ice--just impossible to work with in the colder weather. Since you said "mobile detailers" I assume this was done outside recently?

Whatever they did, it can be fixed. Just be patient and wait for some warmer weather. Not too much longer!

John

Very true John it takes a long time for wax to completely haze over, especially a pure carnuba.

I see that your Mustang looks black. A pain I know all too well when trying to get it right. I wax mine in the garage and then take it outside in the sun to touch it up and get the paint right. It's a pain but pays off when it is done. :btu:

Thanks for the help guys. Ya it was done by a mobile detailer this past Friday, and it was cold out. I was hoping that the problem was just that the wax didn't dry completely. I had him use my Zaino instead of his normal stuff. So it's not a carnauba wax, it's more of a polish that protects. He put two coats of my Zaino on in a short period of time w/o the accelerator and then layered that with some sealant that he had. I'll just leave it on to protect until the weather is better for me to do it myself. As long as it's not permanent that makes me feel a lot better. I was scared because I thought it was something the buffer had done, because I've never see this happen when it's done by hand. Now I just need to figure out an easy way to get some of that Zaino off so I can start over. Dawn dish soap won't take off Zaino polish like it does carnauba wax. I might have to clay it a few times. Repeated claying is the only thing that can safely remove Zaino according to the Zaino tech. I'm not sure that it will photograph well but if I can get a pic of what I'm talking about I'll try to post it some how. Thanks again for all the help.

Sounds like all that headache it would have been better buying a Mystichrome Cobra. then you wouldn't have to worry about the 3D effect. or buy some 3 D glasses. get the ones from IMAX . sorry i never heard of that problem before. good luck and hope it turns out ok.

I took some pics today. All you can see is the hazing effect, it doesn't look 3D when I take a picture of it. The hazing is centered over where the hood meets the front pannel.

Yep it's just some swirls. I usually put the wax on with a buffer take it off after it hazes up then I wait and let it sit in the sun then go over it again with a fresh cloth.
