There's some mis-information in that post. Some reflashes are mandatory. The above post does state that some reflashes are designed to address a change in government regulation, which is a half-truth. Once a vehicle is built, it must comply ONLY with emissions laws and regs in place at that time. Any changes in law may only be implemented on subsequent production. However, what often occurs is a detection of an error or inadequacy in the PCM software, causing the vehicle to potentially fail to meet emissions guidelines. At that time, Ford will issue a 'reflash' to correct their oversight. The installation of that software is MANDATORY by federal law. Failure to reflash a customer's vehicle by the franchise holder (dealer) can result in a serious fine against the dealer. Therefore, they WILL reflash you computer WITHOUT your permission, and you cannot legally demand them to remove it. With that said, most flashes are voluntary, designed to further refine the driveability of the vehicle. The customer is free to decline those reflashes. |
