I did'nt pay attention to the original posting date but if you still have the problem:
That's not unusual...the filler tube is seperate from the tank. You also need to check the filler tube grommet which is located o the fuel tank itself where the tube enters. The grommet has a life of about 8 years max, this is where you will typically find a leak. To replace the filler and grommet, you will need another person, rags, open ventilated space and some jack stands if your doing it in your driveway.
*Empty your gas tank as much as you can.
*Elevate the rear end of your car.
*Disconnect battery (no brainer SPARK = KABOOM)
*Remove the upper mount and cap to the filler tube.
*Remove filler mount bolt from the tank, remove vent tube also (if equipped)
*Get your jack stands ready as well as your helper.
*Remove both fuel tank straps and fuel line support brackets/filter, lower tank GENTLY. You should not need to remove the fuel lines as long as you can manipulate the tank to get the tube out. If you do, use the proper fuel line release tool FROM FORD, the one you buy at your auto parts store will not work unless they are the small plastic tools.
*Gently remove filler tube from tank, watch for any emissions hoses attached, remove gently.
*Remove filler tube from vehicle.
*Remove grommet making sure dirt, grime, or rubber does not fall into tank.
*Make sure the new grommet is warm (pliable) and grease it with Vaseline.
*Now the hardest part...replace the grommet by bending it and pushing, it will take some effort, have leather gloves on for grip.
*Once the grommet is in, grease the new filler tube with Vaseline and push it in GENTLY with any emisions hoses attached.
Reverse the above procedure for install. Takes about 30-40 minutes.
NOTE: There may be a difference with this procedure with your 2001, this is what I did with my Fox bodies and SN95. I used the word GENTLY because of any emissions related solenoids could be damaged, you should be ok though. IF THERES ANYTHING I'M MISSING, PLEASE NOTE IT.
