Post subject: | New Law Affects All Drivers |
Folks, The Maryland Legislature passed a new law which went into effect on October 1st that affects all drivers. Whenever you approach an emergency vehicle, a police car, ambulance, fire truck, etc. pulled off on the side of the road you are now required to either move over to the other lane, if available and safe to do so, or to slow down below the posted speed limit. Failure to do so will cost you in dollars and points on your driving record. Be safe and slow down! Midnight Blue MCOM Historian |

I've always done that anyway. It's a shame that they have to make a law so that people will be considerate. ![]() |

You're right Dave! The article I read was written by a Sunpaper writer who was pulled over for doing exactly the speed limit but luckily only received a warning from the police. He wasn't even aware of the law because it was not publicly promoted through the various news media outlets. It is now being talked about on TV and radio. The question is still one of perception as the police have to determine, unscientifically, if someone is driving slower than the speed limit. That being said, most drivers do use enough common sense to slow down when approaching a scene where police or emergency vehicles are off to the side of the road. The fact that police officers have been injured or killed in these types of accidents have prompted these laws to be enacted. Midnight Blue MCOM Historian |
