Motor oil came in a drum. You had to turn a pump handle to get it out and into a Glass bottle with a tapered metal spout. They held 2 quarts and had a mark molded into the glass to show the 1 quart level. They were made of heavy glass and with 2 quarts in them, you better have a good hold of them or else. Service stations would pre-fill them and store in a metal rack with a wood handle, much like the milkman used for delivery of his bottles. And yes, I did walk to school 3 miles uphill both ways through the snow with no shoes. |
