I've recently had electrical issues with my 2000 GT. It has a slow electrical drain that can discharge a battery within about 2-weeks if it is not driven. I think it's an issue with the stereo, so I've got that disconnected and the battery reading went from about 12.2v down to 11.85v. So I thought I was in good shape....fix the stereo wiring & fix the electrical issue.

Well, this morning, on the drive into work, the battery warning light came on. So I glance at the voltage gauge and it's spiking up way past normal, then dropping just to spike up again. Then it went up and stayed for about a minute until the gages all died on me. Thats when I pulled into the work parking lot.

So, my question is, what the heck is going on? Is it a bad voltage regulator? Isn't that integral with the altenator... that I just replaced a few months ago? Any ideas? I don't know that I want to drive it home as I'm worried about damaging my battery or electrical system. Any suggestions?

It sounds like a bad voltage regulator. (internal) It sounds like a Pep Boys or some other cheap alternator. (please tell me its not) Its very common for those to do that. They give you a lifetime warranty but it seems like they go out every 6 months. If your gauges went out it may have blown the fuse with the voltage increase. If you need any help call me, or if bring it over ill check it out for you. Sounds like a beer and cigar social to me more than a problem.

No problem, though, I don't work there again until next Wednesday.

Yeah even new batteries can be bad. Hopefully it'll all work out. My 68's had a dead cell couldn't get it over 9.9 volts. Bought a new battery and a battery tender to keep her charged. I hope you get it all worked out Corey.

Chedder huh? Don't get much call for that around here.

Well she's running again. After an overnight charge & a load testing at the shop I originally bought it from, they tell me the battery is ok. It's back under the hood & seems to be running well. Hopefully thats it for a while.

The Red top has a 3 year warrantry on them. i had one in my 98 when it was wrecked and they replaced it becaused it was covered. even though the car was wrecked and not running. no questions asked . accutelly the battery went up $30 since i bought ans all i had to do was pay the sales tax for the increase.
