We have most of the quarter welded on and all that is left is the forward side of the wheel well where it meets the rocker.






I think the flair should end at the rocker??? If anyone has a good picture of this part of the quarter please post it.






With the right side just about finished Kurt started drilling out the spot welds on the left quarter, starting to see the end of the metal work.

We have a lot going on with Kurt’s car starting with dropping the motor off at the machine shop Monday, as we are having it bored, decked, and checked over. We also order a forged 331ci crank, rods, and .040 flat top pistons. We have yet to pick a cam yet but are planning to go with a roller.

The left side quarter is just about ready to come we are leaving it in place until we repair the aft end of the frame rail and left side trunk floor.









With the X brace and the quarter in place along with a few floor support it should hold things in place for the frame rail repair.







With the power out for a few days after Hurricane Irene past through, all I could find to work on was the dash VIN plate.

We replaced part of the left side rear frame rail and fitted the new rear trunk brace today.







After cutting off about 20” of the frame rail we used it as a template match-up the replacement.







We added a few holes that were missing and cut the floor flange to the same size as the original.











Clamped on the inside we reinforced the frame with two L shaped 9” long 14 ga steel plate. With about a 3/16 gap between the plates at the bottom of the frame it was easy to access to weld together. After grinding the welds downs there is no evidences of a repair.





Two coats of POR-15 should protect it for another 43 years.












Tomorrow we will weld in the rear trunk brace and fit the left side trunk floor.

Today we install the rear trunk brace and the left side trunk floor.







The trunk brace & left side trunk floor was the best fitting repro part we welded on the car. Both parts went right on with no problems, to side it into place we cut ¼” off the bottom of the package tray support which is not a problem as there is a 1” tall L angle that welds to the floor and hides the cut.










The repro rear trunk bumper brackets do not look correct but we were able to use the original







Just a few spot welds and brackets to weld on and we will move on to the left quarter the last piece of metal to replace.

We hung the driver’s door & fender last night and Kurt just about has the quarter ready to come off.


It is nice seeing the shape of the car again even if it is just for a day or two. We hope to fit the new quarter this weekend.

We removed the driver’s side quarter and have it prep for installing the new outer fender well and quarter.










Like the right side the inside of the rocker is rust free.









We taped off where we would spot weld the quarter on and Kurt POR-15 all the panels that will be inaccessible when the quarter in on.

Kurt didn’t have any homework tonight so we went to the Hot rod shop and fit the drivers side quarter.







We clamped the outer fender well in place which fit great! We also removed the X brace we installed for the frame rail repair as we need to flex the tail panel to mount the quarter.








Part of the trunk gutter needed to be cut back to make room to slide the new quarter in place.










First fit and just few clamps, the quarter fits great! It will take less work then the right side quarter, to align to the shape of the door.

This month marks 1 year into the restoration of Kurt’s car and as today all of the big rust repair and panel replacement is complete with the left side quarter getting welded on.
















We installed the outer wheel well by cutting the old wheel well off a ¼” from the flange. Then we cut the flange off the new wheel well at radius. We welded the top and will seam seal the bottom.








After prepping the quarter we welded a tab on the bottom of the trunk gutter that we cut off the original quarter. It holds the wiring harness to the tail lights.









Kurt has become a good welder with this project but I know he is glad to move on to the next stage of the restoration.







After a lot of tweaking we got the rear valance to fit great with new quarters. Throughout the installation we used the valance to help position the lower quarters before welding in place.







After 1 year it’s not finished, but she is as solid as she was new!

Worked on the trunk alignment and fit as the new quarters didn’t match the forward corners of the trunk. I thought it would be easy, wrong!






This is what we started with on both side, about 1/8 to low in the corner.








We cut a block of wood to the shape of the corner and clamped it to the front side of the trunk. We tried to bend the corners up but no luck, Then we cut the under frame to release the top of the trunk and it allowed us to bend the corners.










A lot of work but it lines up now.

Did a little rust repair and welded the Mustang emblems holes in on the trunk tonight.














We need to rust proof the inside of the trunk lip to prevent this from happening again. Just need to fit the left side of the trunk and move to the doors.

Stop by the Machines shop today to drop of the new flywheel & pressure plate to check the balance and took a few pictures of the .40 over & honed block, and the new Eagle rods & crank. We should get all the parts back next week. Thanks!

More sanding and body work this weekend













The new quarters are not as crisp at the body line from the trunk to the roof but with a little work we have a nice body line up the roof

When back down to Mikes Mustang today to get the location of the rear reflector indent on an early 68. Took a few picture of the Mustang graveyard, I never get tired walking through junkyards!

Picked up the Block & rotating assemblies from the machine shop this week and Kurt and I started putting the lower end together today. We started with test fitting the new oil pan over the new main cap girdle, after a little massaging on 3 of the 4 sides the pan fits great.











Then we set the crank and after Plastigage the main bearings we torque the mains to 60 ft lb







We also installed the spiral locks to hold the wrist-pins and filing the rings to fit each cylinder.

Welded in the left side rear marker reflector indent and we put all the pistons in the motor this weekend.












It would be nice if they offered the full quarters with the indent for the early 68 as adding them is a lot of work. They look nice without the marker lights but as this will be a Bullitt replica we need them.





We put the cam in before the piston as to have room to help guide the lumpy shaft from the bottom











Last piston installed and all the rods torque to 63 ft pound. Next we will degree the cam
