Everyone knows that detailing means taking care of the small details right? Well today my wife and I went shopping and took my car as it had not been driven in several days. When we parked the car my wife noticed that the center wheel caps had badly discolored and were dull and fogging looking. When we came home I took off the worst of the wheel caps to see if I could clean it up. After using Meguairs Plastic Polish and a mild solvent used for road tar without any success I went to plan B. Having recently restored my front Headlights with the Meguairs Headlight Cleaning Kit I thought why not give this a try. So I applied the Plastex Cleaning product onto a 3000 grit sandpaper disk and handheld applicator and slowly started to work the cleaning compound into the heavily fogged up center cap. After applying the plastic cleaner to the sanding disk I wiped off the wheel cap and amazingly it had taken off all of the built in road grime that could not be removed before! I then applied the Meguiars Sealant to help protect the wheel caps from becoming cloudy and fogged up again. The only mistake I made was not taking a photo of the wheel cap before I cleaned it up. The other caps on my car were not nearly as bad as the one cap I took off. I did take before and after photos of the other wheelcaps and while there is a vast improvement the biggest difference was in the wheel cap I took off the car to clean. The other caps remained on the car while I cleaned them and the whole process took about 10 minutes. Here are some pictures of the one cap I cleaned and the other caps on the car in before and after photos. Midnight Blue MCOM Historian

I really thought that I would have to order new wheel caps from American Muscle but a little elbow grease and the right products saved me a lot of time and money! Midnight Blue MCOM Historian |

I'm only sorry that I didn't take a photo of the wheel cap I had removed from the car. The fogging was so bad that you coudn't even read the letters! Midnight Blue MCOM Historian |

Steve, As usual you did a great job of detailing that small area with what you had on hand and made it look great. Great job!! |
