On Tuesday, May 27, 2014 I underwent a surgical procedure to remove a cancerous tumor from my right ear. I suspected that something wasn't right as I have had discoloration and a crusty, scabby appearance to my ear that did not respond to over the counter antibiotic ointments or even a Rx ointment. I visited a Dermatologist where they took a small biopsy which turned out to be Squamous Cell Carcinoma or skin cancer. I was referred to a MOHS Surgeon to have the tumor removed. This four hour procedure was done on an outpatient basis in their surgical center in Towson. Once the surgeon removes the tumor it is evaluated in their lab to make sure that they got all of the cancerous growth removed. Once that was verified a Plastic Surgeon closes the wound area. I am on a very restrictive routine until the stitches are removed on June 10th. No lifting, or any exercise, no car detailing, nothing that would cause bleeding on the wound site. No meds or supplements that might thin the blood and worst of all, no beer! ![]() I can resume my normal routine again once the stitches are removed. I have posted this onto my Facebook Page but I just wanted to share this update with my fellow MCOM Members. Steve The Red Baron MCOM Treasurer-Historian |

As a follow up to my recent skin cancer surgery the right ear is completely healed and due to the work of the Plastic Surgeon there is hardly any scarring or any noticeable evidence that I even had the surgery. I took their advise to the letter and restrained from any physical activities and use of meds or blood thinners that might cause bleeding until the wound completely healed. The Plastic Surgeon was delighted to see how well the wound had healed and released me from my restrictions. So now I have been advised to use a floppy hat or a hat with a brim to cover my ears when I am in the sun. I will also have to have a complete body exam to make sure that I don't any other skin issues that could lead to skin cancer. I can now resume my car detailing and other physical activities again. ![]() The Red Baron MCOM Treasurer-Historian |
