Shelby American has spent much of 2012 celebrating its 50th Anniversary. The company recently celebrated the launch of their latest muscle Mustang named the Shelby 1000. The car, which debuted at the New York International Auto Show on April 5th, boasts a 5.4L V8 engine capable of producing a jaw-dropping 1,100+ horsepower. That’s right, more than 1,000 ponies of pure excitement. Obviously, such a car isn’t street legal. That’s why the folks at Shelby American are also offering a street legal version, said to output around 950 horsepower. Whoa, horsey! The Track S/C Version (1,100 Horsepower): $154,995 + the cost of a 2012 Shelby GT500 The Street Legal Version (950 Horsepower): $149,995 + the cost of a 2012 Shelby GT500 Post-Title Package The post-title package, which was designed for “anyone with a need for speed”, will first require the purchase of a 2012 Ford Shelby GT500, which will set you back around $48,810. Then you’ll need to purchase the package of your choice. Buyers looking for the most powerful version of the car will need to purchase the Track S/C version, which starts at $154,995. The post-title street package for the Shelby 1000 starts at $149,995. When all is said and done, a completed Shelby 1000 is expected to be approximately $200,000. No doubt, neither package is cheap, but hey, with that much horsepower under the hood, that’s to be expected. The final step involves shipping, or dropping, your car off at Shelby America’s Las Vegas Facility where the work will begin. “Carroll Shelby is a visionary who has pushed the boundaries of performance his entire life,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “He challenged the Shelby American team to develop the Shelby 1000 and wanted to unveil this amazing new Shelby at the New York Auto Show celebrating 50 years since he unveiled the very first Shelby Cobra that changed the face of high performance. We will have that very car, Cobra #1 (CSX2000) along with Shelby 1000 on display in our Shelby American booth in New York.” Shelby Magic Under the Hood So how did Shelby create such a powerful beast? Well, the company says they started by stripping Ford’s 5.4 liter V8 engine down to the block to add new rods, crank, and pistons. The team then flowed the heads, upgraded the cooling and exhaust system, and replaced the supercharger. Finally they tuned it all up, as the company put it, by “sprinkling it with a little Shelby magic.” In addition, the Shelby 1000 boasts improved handling and stopping capabilities with 6 pistons in front and 4 pistons in the rear. Meanwhile, the suspension includes new struts, sway bars and, improved bushings. Shelby says the new solid drive shaft is connected to a new 9-inch rear end. The exterior of the car touts a stealthy appearance, with a fully functional hood, rear panel and splitter components. Talk about the ultimate sleeper. This pony is sure to “shock and awe” wherever it goes. Limited Production Production of the Shelby 1000 will be limited to about 100 cars a year. Shelby American will begin to accept orders once the Shelby 1000 is unveiled at the New York International Auto Show.
