How Fast Were They Then, and How Do They Stack Up Now? Starting with the 289 High Performance option in 1964, the Mustang quickly evolved into Shelbys, Cobra Jets, Bosses, and Mach 1s. Our most reliable source of information comes from the road tests of the day published in magazines. The times listed are surprising to me and perhaps to you as well. Looks like the S197 GT could have held their own in this bunch of ground pounders.
