NHRA Powerade Drag Racing Series
NHRA's version of the Chase, the Countdown to One, began Sunday with the inaugural Carolinas Nationals in Concord, N.C. Tony Schumacher, Jack Beckman, Justin Humphreys and Steve Johnson were the pro winners.
In Top Fuel, Schumacher won his 28th consecutive round at 1,000 feet, clocking 3.882 seconds, 317.64 mph to best Antron Brown's 3.923, 309.42 mph. With the points reset, Schumacher is 46 ahead of Brown.
In Funny Car, Beckman's Valvoline Dodge ran 4.130, 302.82 mph to beat Cruz Pedregon's 4.162, 302.08 mph in a Toyota Solara. Pedregon is two points up on Beckman, who qualified 11th. John Force didn't qualify.
In Pro Stock, Humphreys' Pontiac GXP got the victory even though his car broke just off the line and had only a 19.849, 42.40 mph pass. Kurt Johnson's Chevrolet Cobalt broke before staging. Ron Krisher didn't qualify in the Valvoline Cobalt. Johnson has a 15-point edge over Greg Anderson.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Steve Johnson's Suzuki ran 7.029, 191.46 mph as Eddie Krawiec turned on the red light in his Harley. Matt Smith is 34 points clear of Johnson.
