You asked for an opinion so here goes:
Family baggage is just that--baggage. We all most likely have it or experienced it. It's a nuisance but it's not something that HAS to affect your life, and certainly your day to day living. it's unfortunate that your ex's husband appears to be poisoning your son's mind, but try to listen to what your son is saying, and ask HIM questions: "Why do you think [name] has a clone instead of the real thing?" Sometimes the truth gets lost in emotion and the heat of the moment.
You have a car that's getting decent gas mileage and has a bit of scoot on top of it. I'd love to have one, and I could care less what others thought. I'm driving a '97 Mustang GT vert getting 20mpg and commuting 80miles a day, and hanging on out of desperation hoping gas prices don't continue to climb. I have my eye on the European Focus hitting our shores next year, and I might trade in the vert then or on something similar. We're fortunate to have our Mustangs as weekend machines. Who cares what you take on the day to day grind?
I guess it's easy to be an armchair quarterback here, but hey man, just give other people's issues what they deserve--nothing. Live your life, try to be an attentive and positive father when the opportunity permits, and do you what YOU want to do.
Good luck.
John
