NHRA Powerade Drag Racing Series
The two-race Countdown to the championship in each of the four pro classes began with Sunday’s ACDelco Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Hot Rod Fuller, Tony Pedregon, Greg Anderson and Andrew Hines set themselves up for titles with visits to victory lane. In Top Fuel, Fuller powered to a 4.531 seconds, 327.82 mph win over Doug Kalitta’s 4.537, 331.36 mph. That earned him a $50,000 bonus after Saturday’s $100,000 Technicoat Shootout special event victory. In that one, he won on a holeshot over Melanie Troxel, 4.527, 329.99 mph vs. 4.526, 326.40 mph. Fuller is 52 points up on Larry Dixon. In Funny Car, Pedregon’s Chevy Impala won on a holeshot over Ashley Force’s Ford Mustang. It was 4.871, 318.47 mph vs. 4.829, 298.93 mph. With a 91-point advantage over Gary Scelzi, Pedregon has all-but locked-up the crown. Mike Neff qualified for his first FC race but lost in the first round, as did Countdown contenders Scelzi, Robert Hight and Ron Capps. In Pro Stock, Anderson’s Pontiac GTO clocked 6.731, 205.04 mph to best Jeg Coughlin’s Chevy Cobalt, 6.771, 204.39 mph. Anderson is 34 points ahead of Coughlin. Ron Krisher qualified fifth in the Valvoline Cobalt but lost in round one. In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Hines’ Harley-Davidson went 7.073, 187.34 mph to defeat Chip Ellis’ Buell, 7.144, 185.41 mph. Hines is plus 39 over Ellis.
