The 2011 SR-71 Mustang
Roush and Shelby Team Up to Create Charity Mustang
By Jonathan Lamas
"The SR-71 Mustang"
For the first time in history, Mustang builders Jack Roush and Carroll Shelby teamed up to create a one-of-a-kind 2011 Mustang named The SR-71. The two “Legends of Mustang” collaborated with Ford Motor Company to design, engineer and produce the car.
If the name SR-71 sounds familiar, it’s because this Mustang was inspired by the SR-71 “Blackbird,” the long-range reconnaissance USAF aircraft built by Lockheed Martin. Better yet, the Lockheed Martin SR-71 took its first flight in 1964, the first year the Ford Mustang was produced. Of course, in this Mustang creation, the S stands for Shelby and the R for Roush.
Ford will auction the car at EAA’s (Experimental Aircraft Association) upcoming AirVenture Show. Seems fitting, all things considered. Proceeds will go to benefit EAA’s Young Eagles program. Ford has been a supporter of EAA and Young Eagles for the past 15 years by providing various vehicles and donations each year to be raffled and auctioned off.
The car, which is being built at the ROUSH facility in Livonia, Mich., will feature a unique exterior and interior. I’m talking about special Recaro racing seats embroidered with the names Shelby and Roush, a custom racing steering wheel, and a Ford Racing performance gauge cluster. In an effort to make the car seem as much like an aircraft as possible, it also features a rear-seat delete to accentuate the cockpit environment. The car also comes with a modified navigation screen and instrument cluster.
On the outside you’ll see a custom graphics package exclusive to this Mustang, complete with silver exterior paint treatment with SR-71 cues. The glass-roof Mustang rides on SVT Track Pack wheels in custom paint (19-inch in front, 20-inch in rear), and features a Ford Racing Handling Pack. Under the hood you’ll find an all-new aluminum block 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 engine with a 2.3L Whipple Twin Screw Supercharger with Ford Racing calibration and Roush intake. The car breathes in style, with a Ford Racing tuned exhaust and custom tips. It even comes equipped with a roll cage.
The auction for the SR-71 Mustang took place on Thursday, July 29th at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh, Wisc. When was was said and done, the car sold for a cool $375,000.
